How to Keep Pests Out of Your Rental Dumpster
Even with a short-span dumpster rental, the possibility of pests making their way in is pretty high. From bugs to raccoons, you don’t want them to create a home in your dumpster. Here are some ways to keep them away.
Food Waste
There are certain things you shouldn’t be throwing in a rental dumpster – food is a big one. Food will rot and smell, which attracts pests from all over. Flies will come and lay maggots, and raccoons are notorious for wanting leftovers. As well as these smaller creatures, if you are in an area with bears, they will gladly take over your dumpster. Keep your food in trash barrels where it is safer.
Concrete or Tar
When renting a dumpster, your best bet is to have it placed on your driveway. If you can’t do that, have it placed on a concrete slab. When your dumpster sits on grass, dirt, or mulch, this is an invitation for bugs and creatures to create nests underneath it. There is also the chance of someone from the dumpster seeping into the ground, ruining your soil or groundwater.
Cover it Up
Put a lid on your dumpster, especially if you are going to be using it for multiple days. Although bugs may still be able to get in, you won’t have to worry about squirrels, raccoons, and other backyard animals. If your dumpster rental doesn’t come with a lid, you can always cover it with something else, whether it be a tarp or plastic. Something is better than nothing.
Clean The Dumpster
Ensure that when your dumpster is delivered that it’s clean. If you happen to spill anything in it when you are putting things in it, try to wipe it as best you can. This will leave it less sticky and messy and keep those pests away.
Repellents
If you absolutely need to dispose of messy items into your rental dumpster, use a repellent. Diluted ammonia and water is a good way to keep those pests out. However, be careful of any nearby landscaping that might be destroyed by the ammonia.
If squirrels, skunks, and rabbits are a distinct problem in your area, you can buy coyote or fox urine and spray it around the dumpster to keep those pests away. Fox and coyotes hunt small animals, and once they get a smell of the repellent, they’ll feel unsafe and leave. If it rains at all, you’ll need to use more repellent afterward.
