Renting a Dumpster 101 in Massachusetts
Renting a Dumpster 101 in Massachusetts
Thinking of renting a dumpster but don’t know where to start? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered: here’s our guide on what to do (and what not to do!) when renting one, and how Daniel J. Clifford & Son can help with all of your dumpster needs.
Don’t: Go Crazy.
While you may be in a hurry to get rid of your junk, not all of it may be able to go into the dumpster. Massachusetts has several waste bans, and your local city might have its own set of laws, too. Before dumping, make sure to review your state and local laws. Avoid an unnecessary fine!
Don’t: Trash Certain Common Household items
Your old mattress? No. (Call your City’s 311 number to have it disposed of properly or take it to your local recycling center) Textiles? (clothing, footwear, bedding, curtains, fabric, and scraps) No, per a 2022 law change. Car batteries, rechargeable batteries, button batteries? No. Freon appliances? (Refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, water coolers) Only if you get the freon removed.
Don’t: Go Over the Weight Limit
Want to pay more money for your dumpster than necessary? Go over the weight limit. In addition to the extra costs, going over the weight limit can make the removal of your dumpster much more difficult for the renting company. The heavier it is, the more you risk your junk potentially overflowing into the street.
Do: Check the size of the dumpster you want before renting.
Rental dumpsters range in size from 10 to 40 cubic yards. In layman’s terms, a 10-12 cubic yard rental would be comparable to 50-85 trash bags; 15-20 cubic yards, 80-130 trash bags; 20-40 cubic yards, 110-250 trash bags. Visualize how many trash bags you would approximately need for your junk, and go from there.
Do: Check to see if you need a permit.
Depending on where you live, your city might require you to have a permit before you can get to dumping. Make sure to check your local laws for more information.
Do: Put Your Safe Junk into the Dumpster
Good News: your old couches, chairs, tables, appliances (microwaves, blenders, toasters), pots and pans, yard waste (lumber, shingles), electronics (in small amounts), toys, drywall, etc., can all go.
