How to Take Down & Dispose of Fencing
Believe it or not, tearing down a fence is a little harder than it sounds. Fences are made to withstand the elements, which also means that they are meant to withstand you. While it isn’t an easy task, it certainly helps if you know what you’re doing. Regardless if you’re replacing the current fence or just getting rid of the fencing all together, here are our steps on how to have your fence
Prepare for The Fence Removal
Before you start pulling, you’ll want to make sure that there aren’t any important phone or utility lines going through that part of the ground. This is definitely a bigger concern when it comes to putting a fence in rather than taking it out, but it’s still possible to disrupt the utility lines. You’ll also want to make sure that your neighbors know about the project beforehand, just in case it’s disruptive. It’s also worth checking with your local town hall to see if you need any permits before removing your fence.
Rent a Dumpster
If you’re planning on properly disposing of your fence and the accompanying materials- a dumpster rental is the best way to go. Because you’ll likely only need a smaller size and for a short period of time, the rental should be pretty affordable, and much cheaper than hiring a junk removal company.
Take Apart The Gates
The process is easiest if you start with the biggest parts first. Taking down the gates is a good first step. Start by unscrewing any bolts that are attached to the hinges and posts until they’re loose enough to pull away.
Remove the Panels
After you’ve gotten the gates out of the way, removing the panels attached to the posts is the next logical step. You should be able to cut them off with the tools around your house, but depending on what material your fence is made of, you may need to get some extra cutting tools from the hardware store beforehand. This will expose the posts and make them ready to pull.
Remove The Posts
Finally, what might be the hardest part of the process: getting those posts out of the ground. If your fence was built to last, the posts might go pretty deep, but that’s no problem. Just be patient and see where you can get with a few firm pulls. Having work gloves for this part can really help you protect your hands. From there, dig around the post as needed and don’t be afraid to wiggle it around to loosen up the ground.
